The Initiative
The objective of this initiative is to involve university students, in collaboration with teachers and city associations, to open a space for counter-narrative about what is happening in Palestine, Gaza and the West Bank. To open a public space for thinking about and speaking of the genocide we are witnessing, we want to gather every day in the square to read diaries of people who are living it. With continuity, open a space for narrating their life, their cause, the cause of the Palestinian people.
But how can the public space of “counter-narrative” be set up in relation to what is proposed in the media debate? How to ensure that this space remains open and crossed by confrontation?
Here perhaps the University can play its role, the great potential voice of students, teachers, and all university workers. The Joint Student-Teacher Observatory Against the Normalization of War asks itself about the concrete role of the University at this moment.
Our Approach
There are many positions from which to look at history. The very idea of positioning evokes, among other things, the choice to give priority to voices made invisible and, through the narration of daily life, to understand what we don’t say, beyond rhetorics and hegemonic narratives.
Our reading marathon starts precisely from these thoughts: reading diaries of daily life in Palestine over time, university students and teachers in a circle invite citizens to position themselves. To listen more to Palestinian students, artists, people who until recently had stubbornly tried to make a life for themselves and who today see, live, are the rubble of genocide.
The Books
Starting from books like:
- “Diary from Gaza” by Wi’am Qudaih (Tamu editions)
- “30 seconds from Gaza” by Mohammad Sabaaneh (Mesogea)
- “With the wind in my hair” by Salwa Salem (Giunti)
- Other Palestinian diaries
We will read in various squares of the city from 6 to 8 PM, trying to meet always and regularly, from July 1-4 and 7-11. On July 2 and 11, the readings will take place at Piazzale Bertozzi and on the last day a closing aperitif is planned at OltreLab.
